Ways to Avoid Mosquito Bites

Here in Florida, mosquitoes can be a real nuisance, especially if you want to spend time outside after the sun goes down. Mosquitoes are hard to see, and when they do manage to bite you the result is itchy, irritated skin. Not to mention, mosquitoes can sometimes carry a variety of diseases. To help prevent mosquitoes from biting you, follow these tips:

  • Wear a mosquito repellent that is registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and contains DEET or picaridin. The CDC only recommends these two ingredients as effective mosquito repellents.
  • Avoid going outside around dusk or dawn, as this is the time when mosquitoes are most active.
  • When outside, eliminate any areas of standing water if possible. For example, if you are on your porch and notice that a pot has retained some rainwater, pour it out. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in standing water.
  • Sit near a fan when outdoors. It only takes a slight breeze to prevent mosquitoes from being able to land on you. A fan will also disperse the carbon dioxide you breathe out, and since mosquitoes locate targets by detecting carbon dioxide, it will be more difficult for them to find you.
  • Wear loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors to limit the amount of exposed skin mosquitoes have access to.

Our residents at The Quarters Apartment Homes can also avoid mosquitoes by staying in and relaxing in their modern and spacious apartments. If you are considering moving to an apartment in Lady Lake, FL, and would like more information, contact us today or visit our leasing office.
