Things to Avoid Putting Down Your Drains and Toilets

Sometimes, it’s all-to-convenient to toss items down a garbage disposal or toilet and watch it wash away. However, plumbing systems are delicate and only designed to handle water and perhaps a few select other things. Anything else forced to go down the drain could create a mess and make the sink, shower, toilet, or other drain unusable for hours or days.

Most plumbers generally agree on the items that should never be sent down a drain or toilet. Below is a partial list of the things that plumbers say cause them the most headaches.

Things not to put down a garbage disposal:

  • Grease of any kind
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Rice
  • Eggshells
  • Meal leftovers (scrape dishes over a bag and throw away the excess food – don’t put it down the garbage disposal)

Things not to put down a toilet:

  • Paper towels
  • Baby wipes
  • Dental floss
  • Feminine products
  • Basically, plumbers say only three things should go down the toilet, and the third thing is toilet paper.
