Organizing a Refrigerator So Foods Stay Fresher, Longer

Most of us think of a refrigerator as a place where we can put food anywhere inside of it, and it will stay cold and fresh until we’re ready to use it. However, that’s not exactly true. Climate conditions inside a refrigerator can vary, and it matters where different types of foods are placed to keep them at their maximum freshness.

Read on to learn more about how to organize your food so that it stays fresher, longer, in your refrigerator:

  • The door – The area inside the door of the refrigerator tends to be a few degrees warmer than deeper areas of the fridge. Use the door for non-dairy drinks (water, soda, juice), condiments, and butter.
  • The meat bin – As the name suggests, the meat or deli bin is the place to store your bacon, deli meats, cheese, hot dogs, etc.
  • The crisper drawers – These drawers are specifically designed to store produce like apples, ripe avocados, grapes, broccoli, carrots, spinach, and other leafy greens.
  • The upper shelf – This is one of the warmest parts of the refrigerator. Use it for jellies, leftovers, hummus, and yogurt.
  • The lower shelf – This shelf is usually located in the middle of the fridge and keeps food the coldest. This part is ideal for storing eggs, raw fish, raw meat, raw poultry, and milk.
