How to Move Bulky Furniture Into Your New Apartment Home

If you’re like many people transitioning to a new apartment, you’d rather put your financial resources toward getting the apartment features you want than hiring professionals to move your furniture to its new home. However, moving bulky furniture can be a risky undertaking for an amateur, with the potential for both physical injury and damage to your cherished bed, dresser, or sofa.

This is especially true if you must climb stairs to access your apartment. But even if your apartment is on the ground floor, you may be surprised at how difficult it can be to navigate narrow hallways and slim doorways with bulky furniture. Here are a few helpful tips:

Protect Yourself and Your Furniture

Don’t try to lift heavy furniture on your own. Make sure your moving team has at least two people with the strength to lift and carry your furnishings, and take the time to brush up on proper lifting techniques. You can also rent dollies and hand trucks that will make moving furniture so much easier.

To prevent damage to your furnishings, wrap them with stretch wrap, moving blankets, or padding before the move. You might also consider padding the door jambs of your new apartment to prevent scratches to your furniture as it’s shoehorned through. If you’re using a hand truck, secure your furniture to it using tie-down straps. This is important for both safety and damage prevention.

Some Disassembly Required

Whether you’re trying to carry a heavy chest of drawers up a stairway or angle a cumbersome couch through twists and turns to reach the living room, consider whether you can make the job easier by temporarily removing some of the item’s parts. Removing drawers, shelving, and cushions will lighten the load, and you may also be able to unscrew the legs and feet of sofas, chairs, tables, desks, and other types of furniture so they will squeeze through openings more easily.
